The Farm Bill
President Obama signed a new farm bill into law on February 7th 2014. But what is the Farm Bill and why should we care about it? The Farm Bill is the main piece of legislation that regulates agriculture and food policy, food costs, access, and more. It is incredibly comprehensive, dense, and confusing, even to the policy professionals and the legislators that vote on it. The Farm Bill determines the money that the government spends on agriculture. But it also includes SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as Food Stamps) which is the largest and most contentious programs in the Farm Bill.
