Tanya Holland's insatiable interest in truly understanding people from all backgrounds shows in her work. Her original Brown Sugar Kitchen, in West Oakland, California, helped revitalize a neglected part of town. She welcomes a panoply of customers, and hosts special events for a soul food restaurant, such as a Seder. She recently opened a location at The Ferry Building in San Francisco and while its primary goal--like any good restaurant--is to offer great food and hospitality, Tanya also continues to spread her message at every opportunity.
