Tanya Holland’s insatiable interest in truly understanding people from all backgrounds shows in her work. Her original Brown Sugar Kitchen, in West Oakland, California, helped revitalize a neglected part of town. She welcomes a panoply of customers, and hosts special events for a soul food restaurant, such as a Seder. She recently opened a location at The Ferry Building in San Francisco and while its primary goal–like any good restaurant–is to offer great food and hospitality, Tanya also continues to spread her message at every opportunity.
