Ysanet Batista
HRN Hall of Fame: Ysanet Batista
Nominated by: Food Without Borders
Ysanet Batista’s work exemplifies the ethos of HRN. Her activism covers so many facets of the food system, including labor, LGBTQ rights, racial equality and animal welfare. She co-founded Woke Foods, a worker cooperative, that uses catering, cooking and workshops to divest from systems of power, provide jobs for formerly incarcerated and immigrant women of color, and educate people on the history of Afro-Caribbean foodways. Her goal with the cooperative is to reclaim health, political and economic independence from colonialist white supremacist hegemony.
