Nominated by: The Food Seen

Jim Lahey of Sullivan Street Bakery is an artist in his own right when it comes to baking. A multi-book author and evangelist of the no-knead bread method, he’s also the very first recipient of the Outstanding Baker James Beard Award, followed by an induction into the foundation’s “Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America” in 2016. Whether he’s waxing poetic over long-fermented loaves handmade in the traditional methods Italian artisans have used for centuries, or Roman-style pizza bianca flatbreads, Lahey has been shaping the bread game in the States for decades, and has gained a loyal following, or as Ruth Reichl once put it in the New York Times, "it feels like a church of bread."
